0% VAT on solar panels and heat pumps
On the 23rd March 2022, the Chancellor of the Exchequer announced a cut to VAT on energy efficiency materials, including solar panels, heat pumps, and insulation.
These items are zero-rated for VAT for five years, effective from 1st April 2022.
This tax cut was designed to encourage a broader uptake of renewable energy systems by UK businesses and homeowners.
The VAT cut applies to the cost of installation ONLY.
Installers will continue to pay 20% VAT on goods purchased from Rapid Renewables but will be required to charge the end customer 0% VAT, then reclaim it in their VAT return.
With regards to domestic solar panels, the scrapping of VAT for five years, plus the potential to secure other solar panel grants such as the Smart Export Guarantee is expected to help households finance the installation cost of solar panels
